How Codex Vitae Works

Digital legacy planning helps individuals preserve their digital memories, organize personal data, and define instructions for how their digital life should be handled in the future.

Most people have a lifetime of digital content and no plan for what happens to it. Codex Vitae changes that in five steps, organizing everything you have built, writing the story of who you are, and putting the legal framework in place so your family receives your legacy the way you intended it.

Step 01

Create Your Secure Digital Vault

Begin by creating your personal Codex Vitae vault.

Your vault is a private encrypted space designed to store memories, documents, and digital directives. Each vault is protected with strong encryption and controlled entirely by you.

Your data remains private and accessible only to you and the people you explicitly authorize.

For more details about protecting personal memories, see the For Individuals page.

Step 02

Organize Your Digital Memories

Upload your content and let the AI do what would take you years to do manually.

The platform classifies every file, identifies recurring people in your photographs, builds a timeline of your life organized into chapters, and scores each asset for its emotional significance and narrative value.

It also identifies content that should stay private, intimate or personal files that belong only to you, and separates them from the archive before your family ever sees it. You review everything. You decide what stays and what goes. The AI does the sorting.

Examples of content that may be preserved include:

  • personal photos and videos
  • family documents and letters
  • digital photo archives
  • important records and files

Step 03

Your Story Is Written

Once your vault is organized, the platform generates five types of life narratives from the evidence of your life: a personal memoir, a family history, a celebration of life, a formal obituary, and a permanent memorial page.

These are not templates. They are written from your actual content, built around your specific timeline, your specific relationships, and the moments that scored highest for emotional significance.

You review every narrative before it is finalized. The memorial page, once published, lives permanently at its own URL, accessible to your family whether or not the platform continues to exist.

Step 04

Prepare Personal Messages and Directives

Your digital directives need a legally authorized representative to carry them out.

Codex Vitae connects you with a partner attorney licensed in your state who serves as your digital executor, with the legal authority to distribute your content, close your accounts, notify platforms, and carry out your instructions after you are gone.

The platform shows you partner attorneys in your state, lets you request a quote, and formalizes the engagement. If you already have an estate planning attorney, you can invite them to join the Codex Vitae partner network directly from your account. No attorney in your state yet? Join the waitlist and we will notify you when one becomes available.

See the For Estate Planning Attorneys page to learn how professionals may participate in digital legacy planning.

Step 05

Legacy Verified and Secured

Codex Vitae allows individuals to record personal instructions and legacy messages that help guide loved ones in the future.

These directives may include written messages, memory notes, and instructions describing how digital accounts and personal archives should be handled.

The goal is to provide clarity and guidance so families are not left navigating digital uncertainty.

Step 06

Memories Delivered With Care

When the appropriate conditions are met, authorized individuals may receive access to the information or messages that were prepared for them.

This process ensures that memories, personal messages, and important guidance can be shared with loved ones exactly as intended.

The goal is preservation, clarity, and dignity, ensuring that meaningful digital memories are never lost.

Your Privacy Is Protected

Codex Vitae uses zero-knowledge encryption to protect every vault.

This means the staff of Codex Vitae cannot view the contents of your vault. Your encryption keys remain under your control, and your information can only be accessed by the individuals you authorize.

Protecting personal memories and private data is fundamental to the platform.
