Press and Media

Background information for journalists, researchers, and media organizations interested in covering Codex Vitae and the emerging field of digital legacy preservation.

Company Overview

Codex Vitae is a digital legacy infrastructure platform designed to help individuals organize and preserve the digital materials that define their lives. These materials may include photographs, personal messages, creative work, documents, and other digital archives.

Modern life generates vast digital records across devices and online services, yet there are few systems designed to help individuals organize these materials for the future. Personal photos remain scattered across cloud accounts. Messages and creative work exist on platforms that may not last. Important documents are stored in locations that others may never be able to access.

Codex Vitae provides infrastructure that helps individuals structure and preserve their digital archives so they may be responsibly shared with designated people or protected according to the individual's wishes.

Mission

Codex Vitae was created to address the growing challenge of digital legacy. As more of life is documented digitally, preserving those records responsibly becomes increasingly important for families, historians, and future generations.

The platform is designed to help individuals preserve meaningful digital memories while maintaining privacy and control over how those materials are organized, protected, and eventually shared.

The name "Codex Vitae" translates to "Book of Life" and reflects the platform's purpose: helping people create a structured, lasting record of the digital materials that tell the story of who they are.

The Digital Legacy Challenge

Digital life now encompasses a broad range of personal materials, including:

  • Photos and videos captured across years and devices
  • Personal writing, journals, and messages
  • Creative work, music, art, and professional projects
  • Online accounts, social media profiles, and digital archives
  • Important documents, records, and correspondence

Without preparation, many of these materials may become inaccessible or lost over time. Accounts expire. Devices are replaced. Cloud services change their terms or shut down. The people who might want to access these materials in the future may not know where to find them or how to gain access.

Codex Vitae focuses on helping individuals organize these materials so their stories and memories can be preserved and shared with the people who matter most.

Founder

Joshua Patterson

Founder and CEO, Codex Vitae

Joshua Patterson created Codex Vitae after confronting the challenges people face when trying to preserve digital memories and archives after the loss of someone they love. The experience revealed how few tools exist to help individuals organize the digital materials that represent their lives.

His goal was to build a platform that allows individuals to organize their digital lives so that future generations can understand and preserve their stories. Codex Vitae reflects his belief that personal digital archives deserve the same thoughtful care and protection as physical keepsakes and family records.
